For the first time in over 20 years, Israeli tanks are now operating in the occupied West Bank. This change comes as part of a larger military offensive that has led to the displacement of around 40,000 Palestinians from refugee camps in the northern region.
Israel announced that its troops would remain in the West Bank refugee camps for at least another year, with plans for expanded military actions, including the deployment of tanks. This news follows significant military activity that began shortly after a ceasefire in Gaza about a month ago. The Israeli military has launched raids targeting Palestinian fighters, particularly in the refugee camps close to Jenin, Tulkarem, and Tubas.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz confirmed that the situation is serious. He reported that the camps in Jenin, Tulkarem, and Nur Shams are now virtually empty due to the evacuations. Katz emphasized that troops are preparing for a prolonged presence in these areas to prevent residents from returning and to stop any re-emergence of violence.
According to the United Nations, the ongoing military actions have resulted in at least 51 Palestinian deaths, including seven children, and the loss of three Israeli soldiers. The humanitarian impact is significant, as thousands have been forced from their homes.
The military has stated that a tank division will be active in Jenin as part of these expanded operations. This marks a notable shift, as it is the first time tanks have been deployed in the West Bank since the conclusion of the second Intifada in 2005.
In addition to deploying tanks, Israeli ground forces, including the Nahal Brigade and the elite Duvdevan Unit, have begun operations in other nearby villages. Reports indicate that the military has demolished numerous homes in Tulkarem and Jenin. This demolition work has created new access routes, but it has also resulted in serious destruction, including damaged roads and water infrastructure.
Since the outbreak of conflict in Gaza in October 2023, there has been a significant rise in violence in the West Bank. Reports from the Palestinian Ministry of Health reveal that Israeli forces or settlers have killed at least 900 Palestinians in the region during this period.
