Historic Moment: MLB Promotes Jen Pawol as First Female Umpire for Marlins-Braves Game

Jen Pawol is making history as the first woman to umpire in Major League Baseball (MLB). This weekend, she’ll officiate games between the Miami Marlins and Atlanta Braves, stepping into the spotlight at Truist Park. On Saturday, she’ll be at the bases, and on Sunday, she’ll be the home plate umpire.

Pawol, 48, hails from New Jersey. Her journey in baseball led her to MLB after working spring training games and coming up through the minor leagues. For context, the NBA integrated female referees 28 years ago, while the NFL welcomed its first full-time female official a decade ago. Even recent years have seen women officiating major events, like Stéphanie Frappart at the men’s World Cup in 2022.

Pawol’s path was shaped by her athletic background. She was a standout in soccer and softball during high school, earning a scholarship to Hofstra University. Her time with the USA Baseball women’s national team in 2001 further enriched her experience. After earning her master’s degree and seeking a fulfilling career, she turned to umpiring, finding the competitive environment she craved.

Pawol’s climb up the ranks included working NCAA softball and attending umpire camps. Her commitment paid off when she got a job in the Gulf Coast League in 2016, and she has been making waves ever since, even officiating the 2023 Triple-A championship game.
