Historic Triumph: India Clinches Gold in Recurve Archery, Stunning South Korea for the First Time in 18 Years!

Hyderabad recently witnessed an impressive victory for the Indian men’s recurve archery team at the Asian Archery Championships. After 18 years without a gold medal, they defeated South Korea in a nail-biting shoot-off.

The Indian trio—Yashdeep Bhoge, Atanu Das, and Rahul—overcame a 2-4 deficit to win 5-4 against the Korean side, which included Seo Mingi, Kim Yechan, and Jang Jiho. This win ended South Korea’s stronghold on the championship, where they had been champions since 2009.

In the crucial shoot-off, both teams scored 29 points. However, Atanu Das hit closer to the center, securing India’s landmark gold. This achievement marked India’s first men’s team gold at the Asian Championships since 2007.

India’s medal tally now stands at two golds and four silvers in this tournament. The day before, the compound archery team also shone brightly, claiming three golds and two silvers. A highlight of the competition was Jyothi Surekha Vennam, who won both individual and team gold medals. Notably, in an all-Indian final, she narrowly defeated 17-year-old Prithika Pradeep, who is a promising talent with a silver medal from the 2025 Winnipeg championships.

In the women’s compound event, Vennam teamed up with Prithika and Deepshikha to clinch team gold by defeating the Korean team. Meanwhile, the men’s compound team secured a silver, losing by just one point in a close match.

These victories not only reflect the hard work and dedication of the athletes but also highlight the growing strength of Indian archery on the international stage, echoing trends observed in other sports where Indian athletes are increasingly reaching new heights.

As per recent reports, the global archery market is projected to grow significantly, suggesting that interest in the sport is on the rise. This growing popularity can potentially lead to more support for archers and greater success in future competitions.
