KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Texas A&M Aggies made history by winning their first NCAA volleyball championship. They swept Kentucky 3-0 in a thrilling match on Sunday.
Logan Lednicky led the team with 11 kills, while Maddie Waak racked up 29 assists. The Aggies, with a record of 29-4, achieved the impressive feat of defeating three No. 1 seeds in the tournament, including Nebraska and Pittsburgh. Remarkably, they didn’t lose a single set in the Final Four.
In the final set, with Kentucky trailing at 24-18, they fought off a couple of match points. However, Texas A&M seized the opportunity, with Ifenna Cos-Okpalla sealing the championship point after a strong set from Waak.
Kyndal Stowers also played a key role, adding 10 kills and hitting .304. Cos-Okpalla contributed with eight kills, and Lednicky hit .250.
On the other side, Kentucky’s Eva Hudson had a match-high 13 kills, while Kassie O’Brien notched 34 assists. The Aggies hit .257 as a team, a stark contrast to Kentucky’s .148.
The final set scores were 26-24, 25-15, and 25-20. In the first set, the Aggies fell behind before tying the score at 20. They saved a set point and took their first lead at 25-24, thanks partly to an attack error by Kentucky’s Brooklyn DeLeye. Stowers secured the first set with a tip from the Kentucky block.
Once Texas A&M took that lead, they didn’t look back. Kentucky struggled at the net, with nine errors in the first set and six more in the second. The Aggies continued to dominate, out-hitting Kentucky .253 to .077.
