Historic Victory: University Claims First CIF Title with Exciting 4-1 Win Over Rio Hondo Prep!

After years of struggle, the University softball team achieved a remarkable milestone by winning the CIF title. They celebrated a 4-1 victory over Rio Hondo Prep at Deanna Manning Stadium, marking the first CIF championship for the program.

Coach Merissa Guzman has played a crucial role in turning the team’s fortunes around. Last year, they began the journey from the ground up, and this season, the Trojans proudly stood as champions. Junior pitcher Carson Cruz reflected on their journey, saying, “It took a lot of practice and trust. We’ve shown how much effort we put in.”

The Trojans, now boasting a record of 16-10, are headed to the CIF So Cal regional playoffs next week. Cruz delivered an outstanding performance, pitching a full seven innings without allowing an earned run. She struck out eight batters, navigating challenges with composure. Coach Guzman praised her, saying, “Nothing fazes her. You can see how confident she is.”

The game started with University taking the lead early, scoring their first run in the second inning. Alexandra McBride’s single and Gidget Smith’s follow-up triple set the tone. The real surge came in the fifth inning, where the Trojans scored three more runs due to walks, singles, and an error, ultimately leading to a 4-0 advantage.

Despite Rio Hondo Prep’s unearned run in the fifth, the day belonged to University. The stands may have lacked the usual crowd, as many students were in class, but that didn’t dampen the team’s spirit. The younger players showed exceptional teamwork, filling in key roles and showcasing a tight-knit bond.

Underclassman Sophia Weinberg expressed disbelief at their achievement, noting that their school’s previous record had been disheartening. “I never would have imagined we’d be champions in 2025. It’s crazy,” she said.

Guzman emphasized the collective effort of the team, highlighting the leadership among the players and their unwavering support for one another. This triumph reflects not just their dedication, but also a significant transformation for a program that once struggled to compete.

As they gear up for the regional playoffs, the Trojans are ready to embrace their new challenge with the same determination that brought them this far. The underdogs of the past are now champions, and their story serves as a testament to hard work and resilience in the face of adversity.
