History Made: Indian Archers Rishabh Yadav and Jyothi Surekha Smash World Records at Madrid World Cup!

Hyderabad: Indian archers Rishabh Yadav and Jyothi Surekha made history at the Archery World Cup in Madrid. They set a new world record in the compound mixed team event, scoring 1431 points and surpassing the previous record of 1429, held by Denmark’s Tanja Gellenthien and Mathias Fullerton.

Rishabh shined in the men’s qualification round, scoring 716 points by hitting 68 of 72 arrows correctly, with 35 of those being “X” marks. This marks his best performance in international events this year, which also includes a bronze medal from the World Cup in Shanghai.

Jyothi, the reigning Asian Games champion, excelled as well, achieving 715 points with 35 Xs in the women’s qualification round—also her personal best.

Both archers have qualified to represent India at the Gwangju 2025 World Archery Championships.

Reactions on social media have been overwhelming. Users celebrated the duo’s remarkable achievements. A tweet from IndiaSportsHub proclaimed, “A historic moment for Indian archery on the global stage!”

In an interview, Rishabh expressed his satisfaction, saying, “We opened the season with the mixed team gold, but we didn’t compete together in the next two stages. Now that we’re back as a team, we’re thrilled with our consistency.”

On her performance, Jyothi shared, “I’ve been shooting well this year, but today felt different. I knew I could do it.”

This achievement highlights a growing trend in Indian archery, as more athletes gain international recognition. The sport has seen a surge in interest, evidenced by various funding programs and grassroots initiatives. Recent statistics show that India’s archers have consistently ranked among the top in the world, thanks to increased support and infrastructure.

For a broader perspective, historical comparisons reveal that India’s success in archery has risen sharply over the past decade. From limited recognition in the late 2000s, the sport has transformed, with Indian athletes now regularly competing and excelling on global stages.

This incredible performance not only boosts the athletes’ profiles but also inspires younger generations to take up the sport.
