HM Shah’s Vision for a Drug-Free Bharat: A Commitment to a Healthier Future

Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently emphasized the government’s strong stance against drug trafficking, celebrating a significant seizure by enforcement agencies in the Arabian Sea.

In a post on X, he highlighted the impressive capture of 300 kilograms of narcotics worth Rs 1,800 crore, near India’s international maritime border. “This operation showcases our commitment to creating a drug-free India. Kudos to the Gujarat Police ATS and the Indian Coast Guard for their hard work,” he wrote.

The operation took place when Gujarat’s Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) and the Indian Coast Guard spotted suspicious activity off the Gujarat coast. This area has become a hotspot in India’s fight against drugs. Following intelligence alerts about unusual movements, a patrol vessel was dispatched to investigate.

As the security vessel approached, smugglers operating a fishing boat from foreign waters discarded their drug cargo into the sea and attempted to escape towards the maritime border. Despite the challenging night conditions, divers and crew members successfully recovered several large packages of what appeared to be high-grade methamphetamine.

Data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) highlights the growing issue of drug trafficking in India. In 2022, there were 38,064 reported cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, a significant increase from 26,560 cases in 2020. Punjab recorded the highest number of cases at 7,433, followed by Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu with 4,920 and 2,590 cases, respectively.

Experts emphasize the need for a comprehensive approach to combat this crisis. Dr. S. Suresh, an addiction specialist, advocates for not only strict enforcement but also education and rehabilitation. “While arresting traffickers is crucial, addressing the root causes of addiction is equally important,” he says.
