Sam Hoiberg, a senior guard at the University of Nebraska, recently received a special honor: he was named a first-team Academic All-American by the College Sports Communicators. This award recognizes not just talent on the court but also academic excellence.
Hoiberg graduated in December with a solid GPA of 3.479, majoring in sports media and communications. He’s among five standout student-athletes chosen for this accolade, sharing the spotlight with players from Northwestern, Iowa State, St. John’s, and Texas Tech.
His achievement is significant for Nebraska basketball. Hoiberg is the first Husker to earn first-team honors since Shavon Shields did so in 2016. In total, he’s the 10th player from the program to receive this honor. Interestingly, this recognition runs in the family; his father, Fred Hoiberg, was a first-team Academic All-American at Iowa State in 1995.
On the court, Sam helped Nebraska achieve remarkable success, leading the team to a 28-7 record and its first NCAA Sweet 16 appearance in 2026. He consistently performed well, averaging 9.3 points, 4.5 assists, 5.3 rebounds, and 2.0 steals per game. Notably, he ranked second in the Big Ten for steals and eighth in assists. His assist-to-turnover ratio of 3.74 to 1 set a school record and placed him ninth in the nation. Additionally, he was recognized for his defensive skills as a member of the Big Ten All-Defensive Team.
In the classroom, Hoiberg has also excelled. He’s a three-time CSC Academic All-District honoree, a four-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, and a three-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar. His dedication is further evidenced by his eight appearances on the NU Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll and his membership in the Chi Alpha Sigma Honor Society.
Nebraska has a strong legacy of academic achievement, with Hoiberg being the 375th Academic All-American from the university. This record is the highest in the Big Ten and ranks second among all NCAA Division I programs, just behind Stanford.
