Homeward Bound: Hjorth’s Journey in Senior Stories – A Michigan State University Athletics Highlight

After winning a national championship with Florida State as a freshman, Michigan State graduate student defender Taya Hjorth began a journey to find the right college fit for her soccer career. She and her dad, Tom, traveled to various schools to explore their options.

Growing up in Commerce Township, Michigan, Taya played for the Michigan Jaguars elite travel club. This background set her up for a bright future in college soccer. When it came time to recruit, she felt drawn to challenge herself outside of Michigan.

“I wanted to try something new,” Taya said. “Most players from Michigan go to Michigan State, so I thought it would be interesting to explore programs far away.”

Starting her collegiate career at Florida State, she joined a winning team that secured the national title in 2021. However, with so much talent on the roster, she found playing time hard to come by. Before her second year, she decided a change was necessary.

Moving to Kentucky, where she had previous connections with the coach, was not a simple choice. During their road trips, Taya and Tom had in-depth discussions on what would be best for her future. Ultimately, determining the best place to make an impact guided her decision.

“I didn’t want to wonder ‘what if’ about Kentucky. I knew I had to take that leap,” she said.

In her season at Kentucky, she made a significant contribution by starting in 16 of the 18 matches she played. This location change also made travel easier for her family, as they could drive just 5½ hours instead of 15½ to see her play.

While at Kentucky, Taya earned her Bachelor’s degree in exercise science in just three years but wanted to keep playing. That desire led her back home to Michigan State, where she is now pursuing a master’s degree.

“I love a challenge,” Taya shared. “I wanted to join a program that could compete at a high level.”

Her mother, Tracy, recognized the importance of education in Taya’s journey. Michigan State’s strong master’s program in health sciences seemed like the perfect match for Taya’s ambitions, especially since she aims to become a physician assistant.

Transitioning between colleges isn’t always easy. Michigan State women’s soccer Head Coach Jeff Hosler highlighted that talent alone doesn’t ensure a smooth move from one program to another.

“It requires evaluating not just skills but also character and work ethic. When everything aligns, the transition becomes easier,” Hosler said.

Reflecting on Taya’s path, her family feels inspired. “Navigating the highs and lows of three programs has been incredible,” Tracy said. “She’s setting an example for young athletes who aspire to play in college.”

Taya’s journey resonates with many aspiring athletes, showcasing how determination and the right choices can lead to fulfilling both academic and athletic dreams.
