Personal Stories

Zelda II: The Adventure of Link – Seth Macy

Not many start their Zelda journey with Zelda II, but that was my first game. I rented it, and though I struggled, I was hooked. The game’s difficulty was daunting, especially the Death Mountain section. Yet, it lit a fire in my imagination. I explored the game despite the frustration, captivated by its unique art style and challenging gameplay. Years passed before I finally completed it in 2018 using save states on Nintendo Switch Online.

Link’s Awakening – Brian Altano

School was a mixed bag for me. While I loved art class and joking with friends, my true passion was playing video games. In 1993, I was obsessed with the upcoming Link’s Awakening for the Game Boy. My plan to funnel my lunch money into buying the game was a clever but risky endeavor, involving daily cookie lunches instead of meals. Eventually, I saved enough and secretly bought the game. Playing it during school hours surprisingly improved my grades. I owe a lot to Link’s Awakening for enriching my childhood and academic life.

The Timeline – Logan Plant

My love for Zelda came from my parents. My dad played the original games, and I grew up watching him navigate new worlds. My earliest memory is sitting on my mother’s lap while he defeated Ganondorf in The Wind Waker. Fast forward to college, and Breath of the Wild transformed gameplay for me, offering countless hours of exploration that turned into sleepless nights.
