Grace Hannah Buck, a junior at the University of Mary Washington (UMW), has been deeply influenced by a scholarship honoring the late Professor Michael Bass. Although she never had the chance to attend his classes, the Dr. Michael Bass Scholarship has significantly impacted her journey. Buck is pursuing a degree in environmental geology and historic preservation with dreams of working in architectural preservation.

“Receiving this award felt like a validation of my hard work and potential,” Buck shared. The scholarship was established by the Class of 1972, who looked to honor Bass during their 50th reunion. “I’m thankful to him and all the donors who made this scholarship possible for me and future students.”
Professor Bass played a crucial role in shaping UMW’s environmental science program. Under his guidance, what began as a small initiative grew into a thriving department, launching many alumni into successful careers. Following his passing on October 4, 2024, many former students paid tribute to his impact. They shared stories of how he inspired them to pursue fields related to environmental science and how he fostered a supportive community at UMW.
May Sligh, a graduate from 1988, reflected, “I knew I had made the right choice coming to Mary Washington because of professors like Dr. Bass. His kindness and passion for nature inspired me personally.” Sligh has dedicated decades to protecting water quality along the East Coast. She credits Bass with helping her find a career she loves through his dedication and support.
Bass’s academic career began after he earned his Ph.D. from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1976. He spent over 45 years at Mary Washington, where he eventually became the first chair of the newly formed Department of Environmental Science and Geology in 1993 before retiring in 2018. His legacy continues to influence new generations of students.
A memorial event will honor Bass on February 1, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Cedric Rucker University Center’s Chandler Ballroom. This gathering is open to all past and present members of the Mary Washington community and the public, providing an opportunity to celebrate his life and contributions.
