Honoring Bravery: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Awards Gallantry and Service Medals to ICG Personnel – Live Updates

GUWAHATI, Feb 25: Today, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh honored members of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) at the 18th ICG Investiture Ceremony in New Delhi. He presented 32 medals, including six President’s Tatrakshak Medals for distinguished service, 11 Tatrakshak Medals for gallantry, and 15 for meritorious service, recognizing their bravery and commitment in tough situations.

During the ceremony, Singh emphasized that these medals are more than just awards; they represent courage and dedication to keeping India’s coastline secure. He praised the ICG for its efforts in combating drugs, conducting rescue operations, and engaging in international exercises.

Singh also noted the ICG’s evolution into a highly efficient maritime force. He pointed out that India, with its extensive coastline, faces various threats, including piracy and smuggling. The ICG plays a critical role in managing these challenges while safeguarding national security.

In the past year, the ICG made impressive strides in its operations. They apprehended 14 boats and 115 pirates and seized drugs worth around ₹37,000 crore. The ICG also saved 169 lives and provided medical aid to 29 seriously injured individuals.

These accomplishments reflect the ICG’s relentless spirit in protecting India’s maritime interests. Singh urged the ICG to remain vigilant against emerging threats, such as cyber attacks and radar disruptions, alongside traditional security challenges.

He reiterated that a strong national security framework is vital for realizing a secure and prosperous India. The government has committed to enhancing the capabilities of the ICG, allocating ₹9,676.70 crore for the upcoming financial year—26.50% more than the previous year. This funding will support the acquisition of new vessels and advanced technology.

Singh praised the ICG’s focus on innovation, particularly the launch of the Digital Coast Guard project, which will bolster their capacity to address both conventional and non-traditional threats. His reassurance of full government support aims to further strengthen the ICG.

Before the ceremony, he reviewed the Ceremonial Guard of Honour, highlighting the day’s significance. The interaction between awardees and their families with Singh added a personal touch to the event, celebrated by senior officials and the families of the honored personnel.
