Honoring Diogo Jota: A Heartfelt Farewell in His Hometown of Gondomar

Footballers from around the world gathered in Gondomar, Portugal, to pay their last respects to Diogo Jota. Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, tragically lost their lives in a car accident in Zamora, Spain. At just 28 years old, Jota was returning to England for pre-season training after a minor surgery.

The funeral took place at the Chapel of Resurrection, just outside Porto. Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk and defender Andy Robertson honored their teammate by carrying wreaths with the numbers 20 and 30—the shirt numbers of Jota and Silva. Many other Portuguese players, including Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva, joined in to show their support.

Liverpool’s manager Arne Slot and Jota’s national coach, Roberto Martinez, were also present. Nuno Espirito Santo, Jota’s former coach at Wolverhampton, attended as well.

Last season, Jota celebrated significant victories, winning the Premier League with Liverpool and the Nations League with Portugal. He married Rute Cardoso in late June and was a devoted father to three children.

An outpouring of grief followed his passing. Liverpool opened online and in-person books of condolences, which were quickly filled with messages from fans and fellow players. Former teammate Jordan Henderson and Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner were among those who visited Anfield to pay their tributes.

Slot expressed the team’s “sense of shock” and called it an “unimaginable loss.” Klopp shared his heartbreak with fans, emphasizing the impact Jota had both on and off the field. Tributes poured in from the broader football community as well, including heartfelt messages from players worldwide and even reactions from figures in politics.

In a casual interview, Liverpool star Mo Salah admitted he felt “frightened” to return to preseason after Jota’s untimely death. In his time with Liverpool, Jota made a lasting impact with 65 goals and 26 assists over 182 matches, contributing to significant victories like the FA Cup in 2022 and securing the club’s 20th league title.

Jota joined Liverpool in September 2020 after his successful stint at Wolves, where he played a key role in leading the team to a Championship title, scoring 17 goals during that campaign.
