ST. PAUL, Minn. — In a heartbreaking turn of events, Gilbert the golden retriever faced tragedy alongside Minnesota state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark. On June 14, they were attacked by a gunman posing as a police officer. The attack not only claimed the Hortmans’ lives but also left Gilbert severely injured, leading to his euthanasia shortly after.

This past Friday, Gilbert became a symbol of love and loss, lying in state at the Capitol, possibly the first dog ever to receive this honor.
