Remembering Major Somnath Sharma: A Legacy of Bravery
Major Somnath Sharma, the first recipient of India’s Param Vir Chakra, continues to inspire the youth of India. As we mark his 103rd birth anniversary, many, including Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, remember his heroic legacy.
Born on January 31, 1923, in Dhad village, Kangra, Sharma came from a family with a strong military background. His father and brothers were all officers in the Indian Army, which shaped his path. Sharma received his education at Sherwood College in Nainital and later attended the Prince of Wales Royal Military Academy. He began his military career in the British Indian Army before independence.
In 1942, he was commissioned into the 4th Battalion of the 19th Hyderabad Regiment. He served bravely during the Arakan Campaign in World War II. However, it was during the conflict in Kashmir in 1947 that he truly showcased his courage.
On November 3, 1947, Major Sharma led his men against a significant Pakistani intrusion near Srinagar airport. Despite being outnumbered by over 500 enemy soldiers, he refused to back down. Even with an injury to his left hand, he rallied his troops, delivering ammunition and supplies in the heat of battle.
His valiant stand paid off. Major Sharma sent a desperate message to headquarters, stating, “The enemy is only fifty yards away. We are under heavy fire. I will not retreat.” His bravery not only held back the enemy but also allowed reinforcements to arrive, ultimately securing the area.
Sadly, Major Somnath Sharma and many of his men sacrificed their lives that day. For his courage, he was awarded the Param Vir Chakra posthumously, becoming a symbol of sacrifice and valor.
In today’s context, Major Sharma’s story is more relevant than ever, especially as India faces new challenges. According to a recent survey by the Centre for Land Warfare Studies, military valor remains a key area of national pride, fostering a sense of unity and motivation among young Indians.
Historically, India has seen several heroes emerge from similar sacrifices. Notably, the legacy of Major Dhan Singh Thapa, Captain Vikram Batra, and Honorary Captain Sanjay Kumar continues to inspire the nation. Himachal Pradesh alone boasts over 1,200 gallantry award winners, showcasing a deep-rooted culture of bravery.
