The Carson Valley Food Closet recently honored its 180 dedicated volunteers with a special luncheon and a magic show at the Carson Valley Inn.

Tracie Votel, Co-Director of the Food Closet, expressed heartfelt thanks: “You all are the heart of this organization. Your time, energy, and kindness make a real difference.” Co-Director Cynthia Rodriguez added, “Thanks to you, our shelves stay full, and our clients are treated with dignity.” Volunteer Coordinator Isela Aguilar echoed their sentiments, stating, “Your contributions are valued every single day.”
Ron and Lynne Savinski, who have volunteered for three years in home delivery, shared their roles: “I handle the ‘shopping’ for orders while Ron focuses on packing.” Their teamwork ensures that around ten customers receive food each day.
Frances Bolaris, a warehouse volunteer, shared her passion for the role: “I love interacting with clients and listening to their stories. Everyone has a unique journey, and providing a positive experience matters.”
The Food Closet relies on numerous volunteers, donations, and partnerships with local businesses like Walmart, Target, and Raley’s. Bolaris noted, “This Easter, we received 300 baskets from the Chocolate Shoppe, which helped us serve our community even better.”
Established in 1989, the Carson Valley Community Food Closet works toward food security in Douglas County. It serves as the main food assistance provider in the area, distributing over a million pounds of food each year in partnership with the Food Bank of Northern Nevada.
Beyond groceries, the Food Closet offers vital support by providing fresh produce, meat, and hygiene items. Collaborations with groups like Community Health Workers and Douglas County Social Services help extend their reach to those in need.
Food drives, such as the “Share Your Christmas Food Drive,” contribute to keeping the shelves stocked. Savinski mentioned that grant funding also allows the Food Closet to purchase goods from local vendors, enhancing their resources.
Aguilar concluded the luncheon by reaffirming the impact of the volunteers’ efforts: “Your hard work directly supports our mission. Thank you for everything you do.”
