Honoring President Holland: A Legacy of Teaching, Fatherhood, and Inspiring Love and Hope

Jeffrey R. Holland was remembered during a heartfelt funeral on December 31, 2025, at Temple Square in Salt Lake City. Leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints paid tribute to him as a loving teacher, father, and an Apostle known for sharing messages of love and hope.

In his eulogy, President Dallin H. Oaks spoke fondly of Holland’s ability to touch lives. “He left a huge mark on everyone he met. His testimony of God was unforgettable,” he said. Holland, who had led the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, passed away just a few days earlier, on December 27.

Matthew S. Holland, one of Jeffrey’s sons, described his father as “an irresistible force for righteousness.” He emphasized his father’s genuine ability to connect with people, stating that anyone who met him felt loved and valued. “My father’s gifts brought joy to everyone around him,” he added.

Another son, David F. Holland, recalled how his father’s messages resonate deeply with many. He shared anecdotes about how his speeches brought hope and healing. “When he spoke of God’s love, people listened and believed,” he said. He described his father as a gifted orator and an even better dad, always encouraging his family to trust in a loving Heavenly Father.

Mary Alice H. McCann, Holland’s daughter, expressed a powerful sentiment when she said her father instilled in her a strong relationship with Jesus Christ. “He had a burning passion for the Church and the gospel,” she noted, highlighting how his strong convictions made faith feel real to those around him.

The influence of President Holland extends beyond his immediate family. Many members of the church shared emotional stories online following his passing. One missionary recalled an experience with a woman who described Holland as the best teacher she ever had. “Whenever he spoke, I felt the Spirit,” she had said. Such sentiments echoed throughout social media, highlighting the lasting impact he had on individuals and communities alike.

In his later years, Holland faced significant health challenges, often showing immense strength in the face of difficulties. “He never complained about his struggles. Instead, he focused on spreading love and light,” said Matthew Holland. This resilience became a lesson for many about true discipleship, reflecting on Mosiah 18:9, which encourages service at all times and in all places.

Holland’s legacy as a figure of hope was palpable during the funeral. The congregation sang hymns that he loved while The Tabernacle Choir performed pieces that complemented the solemn yet joyful atmosphere. The event was a testament to his profound influence on those who knew him and those who have been touched by his messages.

As we remember President Holland, it’s essential to grasp that his teachings endure. His belief in Jesus Christ and the power of redemption resonates with us all, offering comforting insights into facing life’s trials. Jeffrey R. Holland may be gone, but his legacy of love, faith, and hope continues to guide countless individuals worldwide.
