Seaman 1st Class Aaron L. McMurtrey, who was only 27, lost his life during World War II. He was recently laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia on February 13, 2025. Family members, including his niece Sharon Gunselman, attended the ceremony.
McMurtrey was assigned to the USS California on December 7, 1941, when the ship was attacked during the infamous Pearl Harbor assault. The battleship was hit by multiple torpedoes and bombs, leading to a catastrophic fire and flooding. Tragically, he was among the 103 crew members who died that day.
Initially buried as an Unknown at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, McMurtrey’s remains were identified in July 2024. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) played a crucial role in this process. They used various scientific methods, including DNA analysis, to confirm his identity.
