Shirley Raines, a passionate advocate for the homeless and founder of the nonprofit Beauty 2 the Streetz, has passed away. She was 58. Her organization, based in Los Angeles, has made a significant impact by providing essential services like hair styling, makeup, and mobile showers to those in need. During the COVID-19 pandemic, they also distributed face masks, hand sanitizer, and vitamins to vulnerable populations.
Raines was deeply committed to her work. She believed that everyone deserves acknowledgment and support. “They need to see a friendly face. They need to know they’re not forgotten,” she shared in a 2020 interview.
Born in Compton on December 29, 1967, Raines was a devoted mother of six and a grandmother to four. Her journey into nonprofit work began after personal tragedies, including the loss of her son. In recognition of her contributions, she was named CNN’s “Hero of the Year” in 2021, which she accepted while reflecting on her struggles and the connections she made with others experiencing hardships.
Rashawn Williams, Raines’ daughter, emphasized her mother’s love for helping others. “She loved everyone. She’s a beautiful soul,” she said. Although Raines is gone, Williams vowed that Beauty 2 the Streetz will continue its mission to support the community.
Yuri Williams, founder of another nonprofit, A Future Superhero and Friends, met Raines in 2017. They bonded over shared losses and collaborated to aid the homeless. Williams recalls how Raines created Beauty 2 the Streetz after he encouraged her to use her beauty skills to uplift those in despair.
Catherine Butler, a friend and fellow advocate, noted how Raines’ vibrant spirit and dedication to empowering women shined through all her work.
The need for such services is pressing. According to recent statistics, over 66,000 individuals experience homelessness in Los Angeles alone, with many lacking access to basic hygiene. Efforts like Raines’ are crucial in addressing these challenges and providing hope.
