The remains of two Iowa National Guard soldiers, Staff Sgt. William Nathaniel Howard and Staff Sgt. Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar, returned to Iowa recently. They tragically lost their lives in a terrorist attack in Syria, making them the first Iowa Guard members killed in action since 2011.
The soldiers’ bodies were brought back to the Iowa Air National Guard base in Des Moines on Christmas Eve. A solemn ceremony marked their return. Fellow soldiers carried their flag-draped caskets off the plane, while family members and government officials, including Governor Kim Reynolds and Senator Joni Ernst, were present to pay their respects.
Many people in Iowa lined the streets as the processions moved to their final resting places. Emotions ran high as families embraced the caskets, cherishing their last moments together.
The attack that took these soldiers’ lives also left three other Iowa National Guard members injured. One soldier was treated and returned to duty in Syria, while two others have come back to the U.S. for further treatment and are currently in stable condition.
Recent data from the U.S. Department of Defense shows that attacks on military personnel have seen a concerning uptick in certain regions. The rise in violence against soldiers—whether through direct confrontations or terrorist actions—has sparked discussions about troop safety and the effectiveness of current military strategies.
Funeral services for both soldiers will be held this weekend, with public viewings scheduled for their friends, family, and fellow service members. As the community mourns, the sacrifices made by Howard and Torres-Tovar are a reminder of the risks that our military personnel face.
