The Hope College men’s hockey team made a splash in their first ACHA Division I national championship appearance. The Flying Dutch, seeded No. 14, secured a convincing 5-2 win over No. 19 Midland University in St. Louis, Missouri.
Hope, now boasting a 26-8 record, will face No. 3 seed Niagara University next. This matchup promises to test their skills further, as Niagara has a strong 25-5 record.
Freshman center Logan Nickolaus was the standout player. He notched two goals and two assists, earning him praise as the GL6 Rookie of the Year. The team’s strong start was fueled by an early power play goal from senior Jake Onstott at 9:41 of the first period. Nickolaus and senior Trevor Davis assisted.
Just two and a half minutes later, Nickolaus scored again, extending the lead to 2-0. The Flying Dutchmen continued their momentum with a goal from junior Brady Breit, bringing the score to 3-0 before the first intermission.
Nickolaus struck again in the second period, making it 4-0. The assists on that goal came from Cade Pratt and Ryan Jaros. Midland managed to cut the lead to 4-2 later in the third period, but Pratt sealed the game with an empty-net goal in the final minutes.
Sophomore goalkeeper Sebastian Wigfield was impressive, with 33 saves, showing how crucial solid goaltending can be in high-stakes games.
