Hot Meals on Wheels: Dallas Food Truck Delivers Comfort to Central Texas Flood First Responders

A food truck in Dallas is on a heartfelt mission—turning simple grilled cheese sandwiches into a source of comfort. Ruthie’s Fueled by Good, a nonprofit, is making its way to Kerr County to help first responders and families affected by recent floods.

Founder Ashlee Kleinert put it simply: “A sandwich may not fix everything, but our presence can provide support and care.” With the help of the Dallas Mavericks and U.S. Foods, Ruthie’s will offer warm meals to those involved in the flood recovery effort. Kleinert mentioned they’ll focus on healthy options, including breakfast items like eggs and yogurt, alongside comforting coffee.

The team is also taking the time to personalize each bag of food. Employees are writing encouraging messages to uplift recipients. “I want them to feel loved and appreciated,” said employee Chelmek Jackson, highlighting the extra care put into each meal.

Beyond meals, Ruthie’s is gathering toiletries for hygiene kits. These small comforts often make a big difference during challenging times.

This isn’t Ruthie’s first outreach. During the pandemic, they served healthcare workers and supported local police after a tragic incident in 2016. Jackson reflects on their purpose: “We serve grilled cheese, but we do it with love, aiming to uplift the community during tough moments.”

As they prepare to head to Kerr County, the team understands that recovery is a long process. They are committed to being there, providing nourishment and compassion as they tackle this challenge.

Statistics show that community support during disasters is crucial. A recent survey by the American Red Cross reported that 60% of individuals feel a deep sense of gratitude when receiving help from others in their community during difficult times. This response to support can significantly aid in emotional recovery.

Ruthie’s Fueled by Good is a beacon of hope amid hardship, proving that sometimes, a warm meal is about more than just food—it’s about connection and care.
