Spirit Airlines was a budget airline that faced many challenges, and now it has closed its doors. However, a unique crowdfunding effort is attempting to bring it back. Hunter Peterson, a young voice actor, sparked interest when he suggested that if a fifth of Americans each contributed $45, they could collectively buy the airline. This playful idea quickly transformed into a serious campaign.
Peterson’s metaphor was inspired by the Green Bay Packers, a publicly owned team with over 5 million shares held by around 530,000 people. While he isn’t collecting actual money yet, the response has been overwhelming. According to his website, pledges are already at $337 million from more than 370,000 people.
Public enthusiasm highlights a desire for change in the airline industry. Yet, experts warn that the path forward is steep. Charles Elson, a finance professor, pointed out the complexities involved. “Airlines are intricate financial entities with many stakeholders,” he explained. From lenders and planes to government regulations and union contracts, the hurdles are significant.
John Coffee Jr., a law professor at Columbia University, echoed this sentiment. He noted that launching an airline requires navigating rigorous SEC regulations. Crowdfunding can work for small ventures, but raising the necessary funds to buy a failed airline like Spirit is much harder. Reports suggest Spirit had debts amounting to approximately $8.1 billion before closing, compounded by rising oil prices caused by geopolitical tensions.
Historically, many airlines have struggled. In 2024, major U.S. airlines amassed $200 billion in revenue but often lost money from ticket sales alone. Instead, they profited through programs like credit cards and frequent-flyer benefits.
Despite challenges, Peterson’s campaign has inspired many. Abigail Hartman, a radiologic technologist, shared her excitement about participating. “I just want to be part of something from the start,” she said. Many see this as an opportunity to make a difference, as interest in crowdfunding grows.
While Peterson has received encouragement from an aviation firm, time is critical. An auction for Spirit’s assets is fast approaching. He is also gathering support from Spirit’s flight attendant union, which could aid his efforts.
The road ahead remains uncertain. Peterson acknowledges the risks but emphasizes that they are committed to making this vision a reality. “We’re giving it our very best shot,” he said, reflecting the optimism of many involved.
