An initiative in Colorado is changing how we think about pet food packaging. The Pet Sustainability Coalition, based in Boulder, aims to make pet food bags more eco-friendly. These bags often end up in landfills, as recycling them isn’t straightforward.
Jim Lamancusa, CEO of the coalition, shares that what began with a few local companies has now ballooned into an international effort with 200 members across 18 countries. They tackle various sustainability challenges together.
The focus now is on the flexible plastic used in many pet food packages. This type of packaging is efficient for transport, yet it creates a massive waste problem. Each year, the pet industry generates over 300 million pounds of these plastics, with a staggering 99% discarded. An average dog generates about 39 pounds of plastic waste annually just from its food package.
Interestingly, there are ways to make packaging better. Lamancusa points out that using a single material like polyethylene can make recycling easier—something they are working to teach their member companies. Some big names in the industry are already on board, pledging to change their packaging.
Successful examples include Earth Animal, a popular brand in the pet industry, and Royal Canin, which has adopted recyclable materials for all its packaging.
Local businesses, like Only Natural Pet in Boulder, are also getting involved. Their store manager mentions they are rebranding and exploring new packaging options. Small adjustments like these can lead to significant environmental benefits.
Recent statistics show a growing trend among consumers towards sustainability. A survey by Nielsen reveals that 73% of millennials are willing to pay more for sustainable products. This shift in consumer behavior may encourage more companies to adopt greener practices.
