How a Cyberattack on a National Food Supplier Disrupted Grocery Stores in Rural Iowa: What You Need to Know

On June 5, a significant cyberattack hit United Natural Foods Inc. (UNFI), disrupting food supplies across North America. This affected grocery stores in Poweshiek County, causing a two-week halt at local shops like McNally’s Foods in Grinnell and SuperValu Foods in Montezuma.

Julie Smith, owner of McNally’s, found herself unable to place orders or receive deliveries. “It felt like a nightmare,” she said. Customers quickly noticed empty shelves, especially in the bakery. Regulars Karen Ashby and Marlene Peak, who visit for coffee, realized something was wrong when their usual treats were missing. “We knew there was a big issue here,” Ashby remarked.

Some customers adapted by choosing different brands. However, business took a hit. While Grinnell had other grocery options, Montezuma relied solely on SuperValu. Residents faced challenges finding everyday items. “It’s tough when things you expect are missing,” said John Kercheval, who noticed gaps on the shelves.

Recently, both McNally’s and SuperValu placed manual orders with UNFI, which took twice as long as normal. UNFI advised stores to keep orders minimal to prioritize supply across Iowa. Even though shelves are slowly refilling, operations aren’t back to full swing.

The repercussions of this disruption can last. Smith stressed the importance of consistent inventory for her employees and customers. “When we lose business because we don’t have product, it’s a big deal,” she shared.

In a statement, UNFI acknowledged the situation and emphasized its commitment to restoring service: “We’re making significant progress to safely restore our electronic ordering systems.” However, it remains unclear when the disruptions will end or when systems will fully normalize.

Cyberattacks on food supply chains have increased, highlighting vulnerabilities in the industry. In fact, reports suggest that cyber incidents targeting the food sector have risen by 56% over the past year. This shift is worrying for business owners, as reliable inventory is key to customer satisfaction.
