A gym owner in Darlington is emphasizing the importance of creating an inclusive gym culture. Judith Russell, who runs Paradigm Gym, believes that making fitness accessible for everyone will benefit the community’s well-being.
On National Fitness Day, which takes place on September 24 each year, she shared her vision for a supportive environment. Judith welcomes people of all backgrounds and ages to her gym. She aims to ensure that those with neurodivergence feel comfortable participating in classes or training alone.
“What makes our gym special is the support everyone gives each other,” Judith said. “We believe everyone should have a space to work on their fitness.”
Her journey with Paradigm started as a personal project but has blossomed into a community hub. Families can engage in physical activities together, breaking down barriers that might prevent parents from exercising. Judith stresses the value of showing children the importance of wellness, even when it isn’t easy.
“The first step through the door is the hardest,” she explained. “But once you take that step, you’ll feel proud of yourself.”
In celebration of National Fitness Day, gyms across Darlington and County Durham are offering free classes. Although Paradigm is not part of this initiative, Judith encourages anyone interested in fitness to take advantage of this opportunity.
Recent statistics highlight the importance of these efforts. The Office for Health Improvement and Disparities reports that 34.2% of adults in Darlington are living with obesity, a number that exceeds the national average. This data underscores the urgent need for community-wide health initiatives.
Durham County Council is also getting involved by providing free seven-day passes to local residents throughout September. These programs aim to inspire more people to prioritize their health.
Judith believes that small changes can lead to significant impacts. By creating an inviting atmosphere, she hopes to change attitudes toward fitness and encourage all community members to get moving.
