Fordham University is launching a new fund focused on artificial intelligence (AI) thanks to a generous donation from Peter Zangari, Ph.D., a finance professional and Fordham graduate. The Zangari Family Faculty Research and Innovation Fund will finance AI research across various fields, including finance and economics, and involve students in these projects. This initiative aims to boost collaboration with industry partners, enhancing Fordham’s reputation and providing students with valuable internship opportunities.

Zangari envisions a far-reaching impact from this research, predicting benefits that extend beyond academia into sectors like healthcare and education. He believes that the fund will not only support faculty but also help students and the communities affected by their research. Over the next few years, he and his wife, Jennifer, will donate $1 million to support this interdisciplinary initiative.

The fund also contributes to the creation of Fordham’s Transdisciplinary Research Incubator. Tania Tetlow, Fordham’s president, highlighted the importance of this collaboration in addressing today’s challenges. She expressed gratitude for Zangari’s commitment to nurturing ethical leadership in AI.

Zangari, who graduated in 1989, has an extensive background in research and investment management. Currently a partner at MDOTM, a fintech company specializing in AI-driven investments, he is also teaching a course on AI and financial markets at Fordham. His goal is to connect the university with industry, creating pathways for internships and networking, and establishing Fordham as a talent source for AI in businesses.

AI is rapidly changing the landscape of research and innovation. Zangari noted that AI can facilitate faster communication and collaboration among faculty from diverse backgrounds, potentially speeding up the research process significantly. “Instead of waiting for years, AI can help us reach solutions more rapidly,” he said.
