The Food Bank of Northeast Arkansas, which serves several counties, is in a tough spot. They rely on various sources for food, including the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). However, until the shutdown resolves, they cannot place new federal orders. Fortunately, deliveries already scheduled will still arrive through December, but that may not be enough.

Jennifer Hannah, the Food Bank’s chief program officer, shares her concerns. She notes that the effects of the shutdown go beyond just food supplies. Federal workers are missing paychecks, and many families risk losing essential benefits from programs like SNAP and WIC. This situation could lead to longer lines at food pantries.

“Before the shutdown, we were already seeing more people in need. This just makes it worse,” Hannah explains. The food bank anticipates supporting approximately a dozen more families if the shutdown continues. Smaller pantries, which rely heavily on supplies from the food bank, are also preparing for a surge in demand.

Emma Agnew, the executive director of the North Jonesboro Community Development Corporation, points out the tough choices families face during these times. “When money gets tight, people often cut back on food and medication to keep their homes and utilities,” she says.

Even in better times, local pantries depend on community donations to keep running. Agnew stresses the need for public support through food drives and donations. “Every little bit helps,” she adds.

Recent studies show that food insecurity has been on the rise, with nearly 10% of households in the U.S. struggling to afford enough food. This increase is even more pronounced in areas hit hard by economic challenges. It highlights the growing burden on local food banks, especially in times of crisis.
