How a Hillgrove High School Junior and Eagle Scout Candidate is Transforming Community Support with ‘Express Food Boxes’ for Families in Need

Brandon King’s Generous Donation to Combat Food Insecurity

Brandon King, a junior at Hillgrove High School and an Eagle Scout candidate, is making a real difference for families in need. As part of his Eagle Scout project, he collected and packaged 1,700 nonperishable food items, creating 40 “Express Food Boxes” for The Center for Family Resources (CFR) in Marietta.

Brandon first learned about CFR while researching food pantries. “They were excited to accept my boxes and distribute them to families in need,” he said. This connection motivated him to act.

Each Express Food Box is filled with essential pantry staples, ready to support families facing hunger. These boxes are a crucial resource for both children and adults in the community.

To gather the food, Brandon organized a large drive at his school. Students contributed 695 items, while family and friends added another 1,005. He spread the word using social media and placed flyers around the school to make it easy for everyone to pitch in.

Brandon’s journey to help others began when he attended the Atlanta Community Food Bank’s Youth Summit. There, he learned about local hunger issues and volunteered with organizations like Urban Recipe. “We went deep into food insecurity,” he shared. “It opened my eyes to what it means to help those who don’t have enough to eat.”

Statistics from the U.S. Department of Agriculture indicate that over 1 in 8 Georgians, including 1 in 6 children, live in food-insecure households. Initiatives like Brandon’s are essential to combat these alarming figures.

“The generosity and leadership Brandon has shown are truly inspiring,” said Melanie Kagan from CFR. “These boxes will immediately impact families in crisis.”

Brandon aspires to study industry and architecture, but he is committed to continuing his community work. He believes that no matter where life takes him, he will always make time to lend a helping hand.
