Ingrid Jackson knew little about life in a trailer or a small town. She grew up in Louisville, Kentucky. Her father struggled with schizophrenia and in 1983 was involved in a tragic incident where he took the life of a 76-year-old woman. Ingrid was just one year old then. Years later, in 2010, she faced another challenge. At 27, a car accident led to a prescription for pain pills, which spiraled into a heroin addiction. Despite attending nine rehab programs over the next decade, she relapsed each time. Her most recent attempt to recover came in 2022 when her son was sentenced to life in prison for murder at just 21 years old.
Eastern Kentucky is known for its poverty and is at the center of the opioid crisis in the U.S. Here, addiction rehab centers have stepped in to fill the gaps in treatment options.
