LAKELAND, Fla — Jessica Borga, the Women’s Featherweight Bare Knuckle Boxing Champion, knows the toughest battles aren’t always in the ring. For her, the biggest fight has been against mental health challenges.
Growing up in a tough environment filled with domestic violence, Borga sought self-defense training to feel safe. But what she discovered was a passion that would change her life. “The moment I started training, I knew this was my calling,” she shared.
From mixed martial arts to bare-knuckle boxing, Borga has had her share of physical fights, but she believes that the sport has played a vital role in her mental well-being. “It’s like an underused anti-depressant,” she noted. “Even if you’re not training to fight, just working out helps your mental health.”
Boxing has helped her tackle issues like anxiety and stress. “Your toughest competition is yourself,” Borga said. “I’ve learned to embrace my weaknesses instead of fighting against them.” This mindset shift has made her stronger and more resilient.
In April, Borga’s hard work paid off in a stunning victory. She knocked out her opponent in just 26 seconds to claim her championship title, earning her the nickname “Black Widow.” “All my sacrifices became worth it in those seconds,” she reflected.
At 36, Borga balances being a champion with being a devoted mother and wife. She’s also passionate about giving back; she leads self-defense classes and founded The Widows Web Incorporated, a nonprofit to assist domestic violence victims. “This cause is close to my heart. I want to inspire and help other women,” she said.
While Borga waits to see when her next match will be, she’s confident she’ll be ready. “Working on your mental health is challenging, but it’s essential for achieving your goals,” she emphasized. “I wouldn’t be world champion if I hadn’t prioritized my mental health.”
