Shillong, May 11: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma recently opened a biochar plant at the Eastern Ri Bhoi Organic FPC Processing Plant in Umsli.
So, what is biochar? It’s a type of charcoal made from plant waste. Instead of burning this material, we heat it in a special way that keeps oxygen low. When we use biochar in farming, it helps improve soil health. Plus, it helps capture carbon that would normally escape into the air if the waste was left to decompose. This process can significantly cut greenhouse gas emissions.
Sangma highlighted the numerous advantages of the biochar plant. He explained that Meghalaya’s acidic soil, heavy rainfall, and plentiful bamboo make biochar production a smart choice. The facility features two pyrolysis units that effectively capture carbon, aiding in carbon sequestration. The plant will also produce byproducts like bio oil and syngas, which have various eco-friendly applications.
S. Ashutosh, a retired Indian Forest Service officer, shared insights about the Meghalaya Community Biochar Initiative. This project aims to tackle soil degradation and plant diseases while providing new job opportunities through community-based biochar initiatives. It will benefit local farmers and bamboo growers significantly. He mentioned that another biochar unit in the Dadenggre block of West Garo Hills is set to become operational by June.
This biochar plant represents a pioneering community-focused effort for carbon removal. The sustainable biomass conversion program will store carbon permanently, and the revenue generated will be shared with farmers and local groups. The cost of the project is Rs 1.5 crore, and it can process one tonne of bamboo daily, producing about 30% biochar.
The ICAR-NEH Umiam will conduct testing and train farmers, helping to monitor soil health over time. This initiative could reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere by around 6,000 tonnes over the next 20 years, potentially generating a total revenue of Rs 12 crore.
Around 250–300 local community members in Khasi Hills and Garo Hills will directly benefit from these two units. This includes bamboo harvesters, machine operators, farmers who apply biochar, and those participating in carbon revenue sharing. This project beautifully ties together agriculture, environmental care, and economic development.
In recent years, initiatives like these have gained traction. According to the Global Biochar Initiative, the global biochar market is expected to grow significantly by 2026, with more communities looking to adopt similar eco-friendly practices.
With the world facing climate challenges, community-driven projects like the biochar plant in Meghalaya serve as an inspiring model. They show how local resources can create sustainable solutions while enhancing both economic and environmental health.
