In the spring of 2024, Nguyen had the honor of being the sociology major marshal. She found the experience “incredible,” as it celebrated her hard work and commitment to her studies.

As a first-generation college student and the first in her family to graduate, Nguyen appreciated the recognition from her college. “It was nice to have that extra celebration,” she shared.
Nguyen received strong support while applying for this role. One of her mentors, Associate Professor Gary Adler, wrote a “stunning and thoughtful” recommendation for her. She expressed gratitude for the mentorship she received, saying, “There are so many people who care about me and my education. The college really supports its students.”
Interestingly, she initially focused on film rather than sociology. “I was surprised to be selected,” she admitted. Yet she believes sociology influences how she perceives the world. “Sociology is in everything I do,” she explained.
Nguyen encourages other students at Penn State to embrace new experiences. “Try new things; you never know what opportunities may arise,” she advised. She learned this firsthand, as stepping outside her comfort zone led to growth in areas she never expected. “I wasn’t sure about taking on this role, but now I love it and see it as a long-term career path.”
Looking ahead, Nguyen will begin a new rotation with NBCUniversal on February 10. She will work with Beatrice Springborn, the president of Universal Content Productions and Universal International Studios, marking another exciting step in her journey.
