Building a Dream Camera: The Story of Cristian Băluță
Cristian Băluță is a programmer and photographer who couldn’t find the right camera. So, he decided to create his own. He took the insides of the Panasonic Lumix G9 II and placed them into a custom-made replica of a Leica M. This unique project combined his technical skills and passion for photography.
Băluță found the Lumix G9 II to be the best Micro Four Thirds camera on the market due to its high resolution and fast autofocus. He was particularly excited because it worked well with his favorite Panasonic Leica lenses.
However, the journey wasn’t easy. Băluță felt frustrated by the trend of larger camera brands moving away from compact designs. He wanted a camera that was both stylish and functional, emphasizing his need for a minimalist design without unnecessary buttons or visible screws.
Before starting, Băluță had to buy a used G9 II for about 1,000 euros. He didn’t fully know how its components were structured, but he gambled on the fact that he could make adjustments along the way. Once he disassembled the camera, he realized there was enough space inside for his alterations.
Using Fusion360, a design software, he jumped into the planning stage without prior experience. He learned as he designed, frequently adjusting his approach. After months of refining his design and waiting for parts, it was time to assemble everything.
Despite facing challenges—like the electronics fitment and loose dials—the final camera looked impressive. Băluță’s prototype had some quirks, like a warmer body temperature while shooting and slight issues with Wi-Fi connectivity. However, the labored process taught him valuable lessons about design and functioning.
The total cost of his project, including all components and tools, was around $2,700—much less than a brand-new Leica M. Băluță may not have created the perfect camera, but he learned a great deal about craftsmanship.
In today’s world, where technology continues to evolve rapidly, his story resonates with many DIY enthusiasts and photographers alike. As Băluță noted, “I still don’t have the camera I imagined, but this journey proved that good hardware can be both smaller and beautiful.”
