Sian Banks was once a bright university student, but her life took a dark turn when she met Eddie Burton. Drawn in by the thrill of his lifestyle, she found herself involved in a dangerous world of drug trafficking.
During her court hearing, evidence linked Banks to a significant drug operation. Her fingerprints were discovered on vacuum-sealed bags of ketamine hidden in a lorry headed for the UK. Text messages on her phone revealed she had smuggled cocaine and ketamine through Liverpool John Lennon Airport. Additionally, she was financing her boyfriend’s life on the run in mainland Europe.
Judge Simon Taylor noted that her actions stemmed from her relationship with Burton and the lifestyle it provided. The couple had been together since late 2020. After police conducted a raid, they found drugs and scales in their home, hinting at their serious criminal involvement. Burton was already in trouble for his role in a drug operation known as the Jack and Mac county line.
Rather than face justice, Burton fled the UK, only to be arrested later for possessing drugs on his way to a music festival in Germany. He continued to evade the law, moving from one European country to another, while Banks remained infatuated with him and the money he seemed to provide.
Friends remembered Banks as a lively person who enjoyed nightlife and glamorous vacations. However, they were shocked to learn about her criminal activities.
In May 2022, Burton moved to Amsterdam, a hub for drug trafficking. He had Banks visit him, where messages revealed they discussed drug logistics and joked about their dog being near the drug supplies. She knew the risks but seemed drawn to the excitement and lifestyle.
Eventually, a lorry carrying a staggering amount of cocaine and ketamine was intercepted by authorities at Dover, leading to further investigations. Despite Banks’ claims of innocence, her texts showed she had knowingly participated in drug smuggling. Although Burton’s DNA linked him to the drugs, the authorities found her fingerprints on the packaging, implicating her directly.
In the months that followed, Banks kept asking Burton for money, feeling the pinch of her day job, while he was generating vast sums through illegal means. Messages indicated they were both deep into the drug trade, with Banks even smuggling drugs back into the UK herself.
As investigations revealed more, Banks was arrested in December 2023 for assisting an offender and money laundering. Evidence showed that her accounts had received large sums likely linked to Burton’s drug dealings. Despite her initial denials and claims of ignorance, the court found her complicit in the operations.
