On a chilly December morning back in 2008, Lauren Thomas woke up feeling the aftereffects of a fun night. She had celebrated with friends in Austin, Texas, finishing off her wine cabinet. Though she wasn’t feeling her best, Lauren pushed through. Her coffee and walk with her German Shepherd, Fenway, were calling her. Golf was her joy, even on tough mornings.
At the time, Lauren was living the single life. Though she was openly gay and had gone on dates, nothing felt right. She admitted, “I had pretty much stopped looking for a relationship.” Her friends poked fun at her love life, calling it a “disaster zone,” but she was content with her independence.
After a quick game of golf, Lauren prepared for her Christmas trip to her mother’s house. She couldn’t bring Fenway along, so she needed a house sitter. Her go-to had canceled last minute, leaving her scrambling. Fortunately, a coworker had a friend who could help.
When Lauren got back from golf, she opened the door to meet her new house sitter, Shelley Couch. Dressed casually with a friendly smile, Shelley made quite the impression. Lauren recalled, “I was enamored immediately.” Shelley had recently moved to Austin and was looking for new opportunities after a long career in IT.
Though they were both independent and content in their lives, there was an immediate connection. Shelley was also single and a member of the LGBTQ+ community, but as she focused on her new job, she hadn’t been looking for romance either.
During her time watching Fenway, Shelley found herself enjoying the dog’s company, and by the end of her stay, she had sent Lauren several texts with updates. Lauren was starting to think about Shelley quite a bit, even as she juggled family obligations and dealt with a nasty cold over Christmas.
Meanwhile, Shelley had been taking care of Fenway without realizing how much Lauren missed her presence. As she kept the house in order, she began sending texts to Lauren, updating her on the dog. Christmas was quiet, and when Lauren returned home under the weather, she appreciated Shelley’s kindness when she brought soup and snacks to help her recover.
Recovering from the flu, Lauren reached out to invite Shelley out more. But there was one hiccup—Shelley had a habit of taking her time with messages, leading Lauren to think she might not be interested. They both were progressing slowly but surely, going from casual dinners to something deeper.
Realizing there was chemistry, Lauren finally asked Shelley if she wanted to be a couple. After some hesitation, Shelley agreed, realizing she couldn’t let the connection slip away. They fell into each other’s lives more deeply, enjoying shared meals and nights filled with laughter.
As their bond grew, shoutouts to Fenway needed to be made; he was the friendly giant that initially brought them together. Eventually, Lauren and Shelley made the decision to live a shared life outside of Austin, becoming organic farmers and embracing new experiences together.
Today, as an inseparable couple, they live on a charming farm, surrounded by animals and a variety of plants. Their shared journey continues to inspire one another, as they often reflect on the unexpected paths life has led them down. “Your life can take just one slight turn,” Shelley said about their serendipitous meeting, “and you can experience so much.”
Now, with years of memories together, they are not just partners but mentors for other couples in the LGBTQ+ community, sharing their experiences and reinforcing the idea that love can bloom anywhere, at any age.
