How a Tech Grant is Powering Campus Enhancements at Bethune-Cookman University

Bethune-Cookman University (B-CU) has recently secured a $900,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). This funding will enhance Wi-Fi access and strengthen cybersecurity on campus. The initiative comes as part of the university’s commitment to improve student life, following protests for better campus facilities.

In 2023, students voiced concerns about their living conditions and resources. The university responded by allocating $10 million for campus upgrades. In 2024, an additional $1.4 million grant furthered the renovation efforts.

Dr. Dawn Eastmond, Dean of the College of Science, Engineering, and Mathematics at B-CU, emphasized the importance of this grant. “We’re updating old infrastructure and ensuring it works efficiently,” she said. “But these improvements also offer our STEM students hands-on experience with industry-standard tools.”

Cybersecurity is increasingly vital. This project will not only protect students’ personal information but also provide valuable learning experiences. Students in fields like engineering and computer science will work with advanced security measures, making them more competitive in the job market.

The university sees the NSF grant as a major step forward for both students and faculty. They stated it exemplifies B-CU’s commitment to providing cutting-edge resources. With enrollment on the rise, B-CU is also welcoming its new president, Dr. Albert Mosley. He previously led Morningside University in Iowa and aims to build on the legacy of B-CU’s founder, Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune.

“Every student should have the tools and support they need to succeed,” said Mosley, as he looks forward to a promising future for the university.

Interestingly, the Florida legislature recently allocated $161.5 million to support Florida’s four Historically Black Colleges and Universities, including B-CU. This investment reflects a growing acknowledgment of the importance of such institutions in fostering education and leadership in underserved communities.

As colleges adapt to the demands of modern education, initiatives like this are essential for ensuring students are not only prepared for academic success but also for their future careers.
