How AI Image Obsession Led to Psychosis: One Woman’s Alarming Journey

The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has transformed many aspects of our lives, but it has also brought significant mental health challenges. Some users have reported serious psychological issues, including delusions and, in severe cases, suicidal thoughts.

Caitlin Ner, who worked as a user experience head for an AI image generator, shared her own struggle with AI-related mental health problems in an eye-opening essay for Newsweek. She spent hours each day interacting with early AI systems, which initially amazed her. However, that fascination quickly turned into something more disturbing.

Ner described how the images produced by the AI began to warp her perception of reality. At first, the flawed images seemed magical, but over time, they negatively impacted her mental health. The idealized representations of beauty in the AI-generated images distorted her self-image, making her feel as though her real body needed fixing.

The situation escalated when she started creating AI images of herself as a fashion model. This obsession led her to lose sleep and feel increasingly dependent on the thrill each new image provided. Even though she had been managing her bipolar disorder successfully, the relentless pursuit of these images triggered a severe episode, including psychosis.

Ner recalled a particular moment when she believed she could fly after seeing an AI image of herself on a flying horse. The delusions were terrifying; she felt compelled to act on them. Thankfully, she sought help from friends and a clinician, who helped her realize the role her job and AI interactions played in her mental decline.

After leaving the startup, she joined PsyMed Ventures, a company focused on mental health solutions that also employs AI tools. Now, she approaches AI with caution and awareness.

Experts in mental health are increasingly recognizing the potential for technology to influence mental well-being. As a recent survey showed, over 30% of users reported feeling anxious about AI’s impact on their lives. This growing concern suggests a need for awareness and responsible use of technology.

In a world where digital experiences shape our realities, it’s crucial to stay mindful of our mental health. The story of Caitlin Ner serves as a cautionary tale and highlights the importance of balancing technology and well-being.
