ATLANTA, Ga. — On Friday, Hosea Helps provided emergency food boxes just as families in Atlanta braced for icy weather. Cars were lined up long before the doors opened at 10 a.m., showing the high demand for assistance.
The nonprofit distributed care packages filled with essentials like soup, pasta, granola bars, peanut butter, and water. These items aim to help families prepare for winter conditions while staying safe at home.
Afemo Omilami, the organization’s representative, highlighted the pressing need for support. “Some people can’t afford the basics they need to get through this. I decided we had to open our doors,” he said.
Many recipients, like retired resident Shirley Singleton, expressed their appreciation. She mentioned her plans to return the kindness once she is able, saying, “I’m going to come back and help them out. They could use more support.”
The organization initially expected to give away about 50 food boxes. However, many more families arrived than anticipated, showcasing the urgent need for aid in the community.
This situation reflects a broader trend. According to a recent report by Feeding America, over 34 million Americans face food insecurity. In times of crisis, nonprofits like Hosea Helps play a critical role in aiding those in need.
