AUGUSTA, Ga. – Amazing stories often unfold close to home, like the one at Augusta University. Marine Legentil plays golf for the Jaguars women’s team, despite only having vision in one eye.
Imagine trying to track a tiny golf ball with just one eye. That’s Legentil’s challenge. “At first, it was tough. I kept missing the ball, and it was frustrating,” she shared.
Born in France, Legentil has learned to adapt. She lost sight in her left eye but didn’t let that stop her passion for the sport. Golf is tricky even for those with perfect vision, but she perseveres. “Depth perception is tricky for me. Sometimes, if I’m 20 yards from the green, I need to use my range finder because I can’t judge the distance well,” Legentil laughed.
In 2022, she triumphed by winning the South African Amateur Championship and two other titles. Those victories showed her that collegiate golf was within reach. She started her journey in the U.S. at Columbus State but transferred to Augusta University after her freshman year.
“The experience has been great,” she said. “Augusta is a hub for golf, and we’re lucky to have many excellent courses. The facilities, the coaches, and the support are amazing.”
Despite her unique vision, Legentil feels just like any other player on the team. She has the same dreams and aspirations as her teammates. Her determination reflects a growing conversation in sports about inclusion and ability. The National Federation of State High School Associations recently reported about the importance of adaptive sports, noting that inclusivity can boost not just participation but also mental health and community spirit.
Marine Legentil’s next challenge is the More Than Golf Invitational in Aiken this Friday. Her journey shows us that obstacles can be overcome with determination and support. In the world of sports, it’s not just about winning—it’s about inspiring others along the way.
