Families in Hawaiʻi have a unique opportunity to earn $50 for each child who completes a well-child exam. This incentive is part of the Hawaiʻi Child Wellness Incentive Program, designed to promote preventive health care among kids.
Managed by the Hawaiʻi Department of Human Services, this pilot program encourages parents to ensure their children receive regular checkups. Routine exams help detect health issues early, which is crucial for a child’s long-term well-being.
This initiative was established under Act 127, allowing parents enrolled in Medicaid or Med-QUEST to claim a $50 card per child, once a year, after a well-child visit. “Every child in Hawaiʻi deserves the chance to grow up healthy and supported,” said Ryan Yamane, the department’s director. He emphasizes that this program helps keep families engaged with essential health checkups.
To be eligible, parents must have Medicaid or QUEST and children under 18 years old. Interestingly, a child doesn’t need to be directly covered by Medicaid to qualify; adopted or stepchildren also count.
When parents take their children to a licensed healthcare provider for an exam, that provider will verify the visit. Once the Hawaiʻi Department of Human Services receives this confirmation, a prepaid $50 card will be mailed within four to six weeks.
The prepaid card is versatile, usable at any U.S. retailer that accepts debit cards. However, it expires one year after being issued and cannot be used to withdraw cash or buy items like alcohol or illegal substances.
