The Arizona Department of Economic Security recently shared that about 680,000 residents in the state were on SNAP benefits in November. That’s over 200,000 fewer than in August. Despite this drop, local food pantries, like the Tempe Community Action Agency, are experiencing a surge in demand.
Carrie Aranda, the director of mission advancement at the agency, noted they’re serving around 160 households daily. Just a few years ago, 100 would have been considered a busy day. She emphasized the tough choices families face: buying groceries or paying bills.
One mother, Karen Engle, shared her struggle. With her husband unable to work due to a disability, she relied on food banks while waiting for her SNAP benefits. She described waiting 90 minutes during a recent visit due to high demand.
The delays in benefits can be attributed to a backlog at the Arizona Department of Economic Security, causing many families to turn to food banks. Engle finally received her benefits, but she expressed concern as changes in the food assistance program are expected to increase demand further. The One Big Beautiful Act of 2025 introduces new federal work requirements, leading to potential changes in SNAP eligibility.
Additionally, adjustments in Social Security benefits are likely to affect Nutrition Assistance for many households starting this month. As Aranda pointed out, the increased demand is straining food bank resources. They can only store a limited supply of food, requiring off-site storage solutions.
In response to the growing challenges, Governor Katie Hobbs announced a $7.5 million investment in the Arizona Department of Economic Security in December. This funding aims to address the backlog by hiring temporary staff and upgrading technology.
As food security becomes a pressing issue for many Arizonans, the fight for assistance continues. It’s a reminder of the importance of community support during tough times.
