The recent wildfires in California have raised important questions about how Artificial Intelligence (AI) affects our environment. As AI technology grows rapidly, especially among college students, understanding its environmental impact becomes crucial.
According to Anjana Susarla, a professor of Responsible AI at Michigan State University, AI, like ChatGPT, relies on extensive datasets gathered from the internet along with advanced machine learning techniques. This process demands substantial computing power and resources.
Susarla noted, “The cost of training AI models is much higher than simply using them.” Training these models requires about 300,000 gallons of water each day to cool the computers and consumes a lot of energy. This training typically occurs in large data centers, often located near water sources.
Mark Axelrod, a professor and environmental expert, pointed out that as AI needs more computing power, it also requires more resources, including land, water, and energy. However, he added that AI can benefit the environment as well. “AI can help environmental scientists create and analyze models, and it can assist in identifying violations of environmental regulations,” he explained.
Despite these points, Axelrod mentioned that it’s difficult to measure AI’s overall impact on the environment due to the many variables at play in climate change and ecology. The future remains uncertain.
With the California wildfires capturing global attention, many people are becoming more concerned about environmental issues linked to AI. Art education student Katie Freers emphasized the need for education on this topic. “AI shapes how we view the environment, influences opinions, and aids in researching environmental issues,” she said.
Both Freers and Susarla agree on the importance of understanding AI’s environmental trade-offs. “We need to educate ourselves about these impacts,” Susarla said. It’s essential for everyone to grasp the complexities of AI and its relationship with our planet.
