A separate study published last year warned that the Amazon’s water cycle is at risk. If current deforestation rates continue, between 10% to 47% of the rainforest could transform into non-forest land by 2050. In Brazil, recent legislation loosens environmental regulations to build a highway through the heart of the Amazon, potentially harming one of the few remaining untouched areas.
