Stakeholders are increasingly focused on addressing climate change. Recently, a market fair in Abuja showcased clean cooking technologies aimed at educating the public about healthier cooking methods.

The event was organized by the Nigerian Alliance for Clean Cooking along with various partners. Chioma Ome, Country Director of Nigeria Solar Sister, highlighted that unhealthy cooking habits can harm public health and worsen climate issues.

Ome pointed out that efficient cooking stoves can significantly lower pollution and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. These stoves use up to 70% less charcoal, making them a smart choice for limiting climate change impacts. Despite this, many households, especially in urban and rural areas, still rely on inefficient open fires or three-stone stoves.

Ome stressed the need for Nigerians to embrace cleaner cooking technologies. She emphasized that events like this market fair are crucial for raising awareness about the risks associated with traditional cooking methods. She urged people to consider that their cooking practices might not be good for their health. Clean technologies save money in the long run and are both safe and affordable.

Onyeka Ugwulebor from Roshan Renewables described these clean technologies as exciting innovations that many in Nigeria want to try. She mentioned that Roshan stoves range from N7,000 to N25,000, making them accessible to many families. The stoves are smokeless and user-friendly, using fewer charcoal briquettes and reducing health risks.

Charcoal briquettes are made from compressed biomass, like wood scraps or palm kernel shells, mixed with a binder. This results in long-lasting, clean-burning fuel that is an efficient alternative to traditional wood or lump charcoal.

Recent research shows that transitioning to clean cooking can dramatically improve health outcomes, especially for women and children who are most affected by smoke from traditional cooking methods. By adopting these modern technologies, families can enjoy better health and contribute to a healthier planet.
