LOCK HAVEN — This year marks the fourth annual “Food for Fines” event, hosted by the police departments of Commonwealth University (CU) at Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, and Mansfield. From November 10-21, students and staff could donate canned goods to get their parking tickets waived.
In total, this initiative brought in 1,245 cans and forgave $249 in parking fines. Each ticket removal required a donation of five food items. Leo Sokoloski, director of CU police, emphasizes the importance of service and community connection.
“This program is about more than just parking fines. It reflects our commitment to support those in need,” Sokoloski said. The collected food will benefit local organizations: the Bloomsburg Food Cupboard, Haven Cupboard at Lock Haven, and Campus Cupboard and Mansfield Food Pantry.
Events like this highlight a growing trend among universities to engage students in community welfare. According to recent statistics from the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, around 78% of college students report food insecurity at some point in their education. Efforts like “Food for Fines” help combat this issue while fostering a spirit of generosity and connection on campus.
