LONDON – The 78th British Academy Film Awards, or BAFTAs, are just around the corner, and “Conclave” is leading the nominations. This captivating film, which explores the drama of papal elections, has 12 nods, including best picture, best director for Edward Berger, and best actor for Ralph Fiennes. Meanwhile, the musical “Emilia Pérez” is nominated in 11 categories. However, it faces criticism and uncertainty due to backlash against its creator.
On the red carpet, you’ll see stars like Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, and Kate Winslet gathering at London’s Royal Festival Hall. People are eager to see how these awards may hint at Hollywood’s upcoming Oscars on March 3.
“Emilia Pérez” stars Karla Sofía Gascón as a transgender ex-cartel boss. Unfortunately, she won’t be attending the ceremony due to controversy over her past social media comments. The backlash has raised questions about the film, which has 13 Oscar nominations, including accusations of cultural misrepresentation.
In addition to “Conclave” and “Emilia Pérez,” other strong contenders include the architectural epic “The Brutalist,” Sean Baker’s tragicomedy “Anora,” and James Mangold’s biopic “A Complete Unknown.”
With an unusual awards season in play, the BAFTAs will offer perspective on potential Oscar winners. The leading actor category features Adrien Brody, Ralph Fiennes, and Timothée Chalamet, among others. Gascón, Demi Moore, and Saoirse Ronan are in contention for best actress, and whoever wins will be a first-time BAFTA recipient.

Although the ceremony is set to be star-studded, it will miss royal presence as neither Prince William nor Kate Middleton are attending this year. Hosted by David Tennant, the BAFTAs will feature a performance by Take That, known for their hit “Greatest Day,” which is included in the “Anora” soundtrack. Jeff Goldblum will also participate with a piano tribute to those who have passed away in the last year.
