Climate change poses a serious threat to global food security. However, new research suggests that climate mitigation efforts could actually make hunger worse if not managed carefully. A recent study by a team from several universities and institutes, including The University of Tokyo, highlights how policies aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions might lead to more hunger unless they also account for food security.
The Current Landscape of Food Availability
Under current conditions, food availability is projected to rise by 2050. This means that about 390 million fewer people will face hunger compared to 2020, bringing the total to around 330 million. This optimistic projection relies on a moderate development path, known as SSP2, which includes steady population growth and advancements rooted in historical trends.
Hunger Risks from Climate Mitigation Efforts
To meet climate goals, like limiting global warming to 1.5 °C, various policies such as carbon pricing are being proposed. While these initiatives are designed to reduce emissions, they could also drive up food prices and decrease crop availability. The research shows that by 2050, around 56 million additional people might face hunger due to these changes.
Ozone Reduction: A Silver Lining
Interestingly, the same climate initiatives that limit emissions also slash ozone pollution levels. This reduction can lead to better crop yields, which might help counteract some of the negative impacts on food security. The study estimates that approximately 8.4 million people at risk of hunger could be saved as a result of these ozone reductions.
Regional Insights on Hunger
Regions most affected by hunger today, such as Sub-Saharan Africa and India, will see the most significant benefits from reduced ozone levels. About 56% of the positive effects from these reductions could occur in these areas.

Overall, this research underscores the importance of looking at climate policies through a broader lens. Mitigation strategies need to account for food security to ensure they don’t inadvertently increase hunger risks. Experts argue that integrating food security considerations into climate initiatives will be crucial for achieving both environmental and humanitarian goals.
