SHELDON, Vt. — Every summer, a dedicated team of volunteers works hard to provide meals for hundreds of kids in Vermont while school is out. Vermont Blue Sky Packing is at the forefront of this effort, using federal USDA funding to stock local families’ fridges with cooked meals.
These meals are a lifeline for many children, especially when school is closed. Scott Choiniere, president of the organization, notes, “We’re going into areas that really need support.” Every day, the team prepares over 1,600 meals, each box designed to offer a week’s worth of breakfasts and lunches.
The impact of this program is significant. According to recent statistics, school closures can leave many children without reliable access to nutritious meals—a situation Vermont Blue Sky Packing is tackling head-on.
Young adults are also gaining valuable experience through this initiative. Brooke Rainville, another member of the program, shares her pride: “When we see empty pallets, it means we were able to serve families in need.”
Hailey Carey, a program participant, recalls how the project began with just a few community members. “Now, it’s really grown,” she says. The demand for meals has surged, leading to a tripling of production since last year. This growth means more jobs at the Sheldon warehouse and a broader reach in the community.
The plan for the future? Expansion beyond Vermont to other parts of New England. For now, boxes are shipped to various locations across Vermont, where volunteers, including many school staff, ensure families receive the meals they need.
Desiree Stevens, a school employee from St. Albans City, values the opportunity to connect with families during summer. “It’s great to see them and say hi over the summer,” she notes.
This initiative underscores how a community can come together to help those in need, illustrating the power of collaboration and caring.
