The Education Freedom Movement is Gaining Momentum
Andrew Handel, the director of the ALEC Education and Workforce Development Task Force, recently shared insights in The Washington Times. He discussed how the education freedom movement has grown across the United States, creating more opportunities for students and empowering parents.
The education freedom movement has shifted from a quiet idea to a loud call for change. President Trump has promised to support this movement as he begins his second term. Many states are now embracing this idea, and there’s a lot to celebrate.
Florida stands out in this movement. It is ranked No. 1 in the American Legislative Exchange Council’s 2025 Index of State Education Freedom. The state has changed its education system to better serve students. Instead of a one-size-fits-all method, they allow education funding to follow students to various schools, such as charter, home, and virtual options. A key program in Florida is the Family Empowerment Scholarship Program, designed to meet the unique needs of each child rather than just sticking with traditional educational systems.
Florida is not alone. States like Ohio are also making progress. Ohio recently moved up 10 spots in the rankings after opening the EdChoice Scholarship Program to all families. This change has made educational choices more accessible, promoting educational equity for everyone.
